"The First Colonial Crew Club Auxiliary, Inc. (FCCCA) is the booster club that sponsors two clubs: the First Colonial High School (FCHS) Crew Club whose competitive season is in the late winter and spring, and the Patriot Rowing Club in the fall and off-season.
The FCHS Crew Club competitions are for First Colonial High School student rowers whereas the Patriot Rowing Club is open to all high school rowers.
FCHS Crew Club is a member of the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (EVSRA) and an associate member of the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association.
FCCCA membership enables participation in both clubs throughout the school year."
ABOUT FC CREW: Founded in 2001 by a handful of members and one rowing machine, the First Colonial Crew Club has grown to include 60 members and 10 professional rowing shells. Learn a new skill. We have a year round rowing program of conditioning and practice on the water. Come enjoy a sport that celebrates the nautical heritage of our community and provides for lifelong fitness and health. Find out why "Crew" is one of the fastest growing NCAA sports in the nation! For more information see Ms. Kenison in Room 214 .
THE SPORT OF CREW: Rowing is a total body workout. Although rowing looks like an upper body sport, the strength of the rowing stroke comes from the legs. Rowing is one of the few athletic sports that involve all of the body's major muscle groups. It is a great aerobic workout; second only to cross country skiing, with low impact on joints. Rowing looks graceful, elegant, and sometimes effortless when well done, but don't be fooled. The sport demands endurance, strength, balance, and mental discipline.
THE SEASONS: Crew has a fall, winter, and spring season. The team practices daily from 4-6pm at a home in Alanton. The fall is a time for cardiovascular conditioning and long-distance races called head races. During the winter, the team does land conditioning and ergathons (indoor rowing competitions). Spring practices are held daily with focus on enhancing form, power, and speed. Rowers look forward to the race on Saturday and the pasta party the night before.
REGATTAS: Usually on Saturday, with an occasional Sunday, the regattas are exciting competitions
with as many as 20 different teams attending. They are an all day affair, starting early in the morning,
usually lasting until mid-afternoon. Along with serious competition comes food and socializing at
the river's edge.
COST: The cost for FC Crew Club is $600 for the year. Uniform costs are an additional $100. The cost for the club covers all coaches' fees, boat usage & maintenance, regatta fees, food at regattas, and other benefits. This includes over 300 hours of coaching time. Last year the team had about 63 members in the fall and 55 in the Spring. The club has four 8-man shells, two 4-man shells, a boat trailer, several coaches boats and a food trailer. There is an about equal amount of girls as boys on the team. There is one full time coach and two part time coaches.
